Walking ancient trails

Following in the footsteps of our ancestors. Via Annia, the best preserved Roman road of the Iberian Peninsula. The real path linking Olot and Vic. Nature and culture  together to offer unique landscapes. The trails are now preserved, formerly represented the main link between territories. The ancient paths, had the goal of uniting people, bring people to the sites of religious worship or become the access to natural resources. Some of the oldest roads that remain in Catalunya, can be found in the region of La Garrotxa. The paths of the two proposals tours run through the network of trails Itinerànnia, a trail network of over 2,500 km linking the territories of La Garrotxa, l’Alt Empordà and Ripollès.

Detailed Itinerary:  1st day – Arrival at  Olot , accommodation at Hotel Borrell.

2nd day –  Transfer from Hotel to Sant Pau de Segúries. The main purpose of the journey is follow the best preserved part of via Annia, a roman road that began at via Augusta, close to Figueres, that pass through the Pyrenees on Ares peak, after Empordà and Garrotxa region. Then linked again with the main road near Perpignan. Once on Bianya valley, the trail goes next to the river until the village of Hostalnou de Bianya. From here, and following the trail that linked Bianya lands with Besalú county, we will be at Olot.

3rd day –  We’ll go by own vehicle to Hostalets d’en Bas (village). After leaving it at the car park at the entrance of the village, we’ll follow the real path that centuries ago linked Olot with Vic. The path climb up through a holm oak forest; it’s at the end whrere the stone path is best preserved. After the natural spring of les Marrades, we’ll get to the top of the cliffs of Falgars. The walk goes next to the cliff, walking on meadows and fields, crossing streams. When it rains, these streams are full of water that fall on cascades to d’en Bas valley. So quickly we’ll see our next goal: Sant Miquel de Castelló. This is a medieval origin building, related with the castle of d’en Bas counts. From this point, the views of the landscape are great. The walk down it’s following  the path that linked the village of Hostalets d’en Bas with Sant Miquel house.
