Troglodytic Habitat Interpretation Centre

In the Troglodytic Habitat Interpretation Centre and the ethnographic centre, we provide information on the medieval caves situated on a vertical scarp created by fluvial sediments in Purullena. A group of artificial caves with remains from the medieval period consisting of shelters, granaries, columbaria, watch caves, stables, dwellings, etc. They were inhabited by farming communities in the Fardes valley who used the caves when they needed protection against looting, harsh weather and imminent attacks in order to avoid, among other things, captivity or expulsion.

These types of constructions, split into different levels in line the change in competence of the different layers of geological strata, are difficult to access and used to be enclosed by millstones. These characteristics are typical of Berber tribal culture in the Moroccan Atlas mountains and indicate that troglodytes lived in this area. The dwellings have been preserved as they were considered part of the Cortijo Viejo de Almagruz house until 1970.

They’re now part of the Troglodytic Habitat Interpretation Centre’s Heritage and Environment Valuation project, which is carrying out an ethnographic study of the evolution of the cave over time and the bioclimatic influences on this human habitat.

Almagruz’s philosophy is to maintain and protect the area around us. Therefore:

  • We collaborate with and are partners of ALVELAL, working on the recovery and development of the land based on the four returns philosophy.
  • We’ve created an area with more than 150 species of plants, as well as an eco-friendly olive tree grove.
  • We carry out our activity based on Slow Tourism and silent tourism.
  • We use local products, both to make our breakfasts and in the welcome basket that we leave for our clients in their accommodation.
  • We participate in the esparto grass recovery project: La Espartopedia.
  • We’ve created a space to encourage learning. We know that people understand the environment to the extent that they’ve experienced it and feel affected by it, but above all when they’re able to have a positive impact on it.
