About the destination
The delta of the river Ebro is a Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve located in Tarragona, Catalonia. It offers an incomparable, unique and singular landscape of great biological interest of 320 km2 and a vital Mediterranean wetland.
The delta is also a vibrant destination where nature merges with traditions, culture, architectural heritage and history closely linked to rice farming. The rice paddies dominate the protected area, but there are also lagoons surrounded by reeds and rushes, large areas of brackish soils and long and deserted beaches of dune formations.
The protected area is also a bird watching hotspot all throughout the year. Over 70% of the world population of the rare Audouin’s Gull breeds in the Ebro Delta and the exotic flamingo is also a common feature of the area.
The gastronomy is also a key feature of the delta, where a diverse array of local products make quality dishes and outstanding Mediterranean cuisine.
In the delta of the river Ebro Natural Park, your local hosts are waiting for you to show you the different ecosystems of the protected area and its bird diversity. The best way to do so is to join in an “Eco-cultural Safari”: start your day in a vehicle tour of the natural area to end in the rice paddies, discovering the traditional cultivation of rice through the knowledge of local people.
To learn more about the cultural heritage of the area, you can visit the Ecomuseum – Interpretation Centre of the Natural Park, in the town of Deltebre. Here you can join a guided tour over the estuary down to the sea and spot the different wildlife and cultural heritage you can find along the way.
