About the destination
The Natural Park of the Sierras Subbéticas Cordobesas is located in the province of Córdoba , the heart of Andalusia. It is a destination of great scenic beauty and important ecological and geological interest, with diverse landscapes that range from calcareous peaks to gentler terrains of olive groves and enchanting towns.
One of the most interesting ecotourism activities is the “Vía Verde del Aceite”, a trail based on an old railway line that has been restored for hikers and cyclists. Close by we find the Iznájar reservoir, the largest body of freshwater in Andalusia, where different water sports can be enjoyed. The local heritage and culture are also highlights of the destination, with an important archaeological and monumental legacy.
Ecotourism experiences
The Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park is a great destination for cycling and there is no better way to explore it than joining guided cycling tours. One of the most popular cycling trails starts at Luque Station where you can see old wagons that have been transformed into a bar, and the olive oil museum. From here you will bike to the nearby town of Zuheros, a small village at the top of aa rocky hill and enjoy its Mediaeval castle and the karstic cave of “Los Murciélagos”
However, if you are passionate about olive oil, your local hosts can take you to immerse yourself in a sea of ancient olive groves. Meet an experienced farmer at Brácana who will talk to you about the history and varieties of ancient olive trees, as well as explain how to care for them. After this experience, your senses will discover the tastes, smells and nuances of different oils in an Extra Virgin olive oil tasting class. One of the best in the world!
